Whoops, I lied in my last post. I'm social. Really Really Social. Yay! I absolutely adore discovering new cities, which is why I've had no time to post. This post is kind of a million things in one.

That was from 80's night. Seriously though, why plan an 80's party? Who packs their bags and thinks: "Wow, I totally need to bring this 80's gear"? Actually I shouldn't say that. The 80's and 80's parties are sweet. At Corey's place Cordelle and I made "Mullet Corner" with some old pictures of... somebody... hee hee. It's the best corner in the world.

| Quebec City so far.... |

Just a question, but why can't French people just give their kids one name? Everyone is Jean-Paul or Jean-Claude or Marie-Claire or whatever. Even all the buildings in the university have hyphenated names, like my residence is named Pavillion Alphonse-Marie-Parent. They should seriously learn how to choose just one name.
But besides for that, Quebec City is awesome and my French is improving A LOT. I got placed in the highest level in my program after taking the placement test, and it's kind of cool knowing what's going on in a foreign language after being semi-clueless in Japan for so long.
I've met really cool people too, but I seem to be kind of less social than I was in Japan. I'm not sure if it's because learning French is really important to me, so I want to concentrate on that, OR if I've just grown up and that I'm not so interested in going out all the time OR that somehow, over the past year, I've managed to become an introvert. Either way I seem to not be social and then I worry that I should be MORE social.
Not that I haven't been going out. In fact, in the 9 days I've been here I've gone to a movie, gone to two concerts, seen the summer festival and ate out at the oldest restaurant in Quebec city, gone on a photography excursion in the woods and done a group bike trip along the St Lawrence.
Anyway, I guess I should just do what I feel like, eh? Which is to be semi-social. And I have had fun while I've been going out... here's some pictures to prove it.

Does it make any sense that diet coke is making my stomach feel better? I always have stomach aches and the other day I had the worst one. I ALSO was totally craving diet coke. I thought it would be bad for me, so I held off for awhile, but then I caved and drank one. THEN I drank another and went for a long walk.
and i totally felt better...
Then today I had a stomachache and I drank a diet coke and then rode my bike home, and my stomach was better again! I know it wasn't just the exersise, because I had been riding my bike all day beforehand and my stomach still was hurting. But for some reason diet coke plus exersise is magic...
I don't get it. I'm thinking I should quit because it must be bad for me, but I probably will keep drinking it until it stops working. I hate stomachaches.

I went to Corey's hometown! And it was sooooooooooooo pretty. Anyway, I'd write more but because of the trip and also because I like to lie around and watch "Desperate Housewives", I have insane amounts of studing/work to do.
I actually don't NEED to put up this slide show now, but I like procrastinating.
Wow.. the slide show is too big! Well, if you are interested in seeing it properly you can just click the "view all images" button.
On this trip at one point I turned to Corey and said: "You know what? Sometimes I think you are a 72-year old man in a 30-year-old's body."
He said, "You know, you're not the first person to tell me that".
That was maybe the scariest thing of the whole trip.
Whatever... I'll just think of the 30-year old body. Yay!

C$%^^&%$%^^p.... I just paid for a new computer screen two months ago and it BROKE. The guys at the shop that fixed it say it's probably NOT covered under warranty and they cant tell if it is (covered) or not because they don't keep their receipts for more than a month ?!
Also, they told me it's NOT an actual Sony screen, and then five minutes later, when the story suited him better, he said it WAS an actual Sony screen, and SONY won't pay for me to have it replaced.
He said he's "looking for the invoice now and he'll call me if he finds it"
... We'll see if I ever hear from him again.

So for March, I decided I would do the Hayato school tours for 15 days... kids were awesome, team of six I worked with were amazing... generally I'm glad I did it even though it involved a lot of 12, 14 and 16 hour days... everyday! I did a lot of shouting(the fun kind) and shopping and dragging kids around. The big highlight was the sunny boat trip in Victoria were we saw killer whales ... from really really up close... I love being on the water in the first place but that was just incredible!
Here's a pic... more pics behind the cut at the end of the post, and pretty near everything else is on is on the slideshow (which I haven't finished yet):

More big news... I got a $2000 bursary to study French in Quebec city this summer! It probably won't cover absolutely EVERYTHING (flight, tuition, lodging, food) but it'll pay for A LOT. I'm still not 100% sure if I am going... but pretty sure... it's such a good opportunity, eh? PLUS I've always wanted to go to Montreal... I might be there every weekend!
This week I'm hoping to get some biking done... like somewhere pretty that I've never been before. I'll post pics of that too if I get to it!

So many people I hadn't seen since I've gone to Japan and everyone said I looked so different, and younger than before I left ??!! ( Clearly, gray hair that has appeared since the whole tsunami/broken leg/ surgery incidents is invisible in restaurant light...
Okay, I plan to update some more right now!

I was at Brannen and Amanda's on Sunday, and Mike asked me why I hadn't been writing in my journal.
"Because my life is boring Mike, I go to school and then I hang out with Corey and Cordelle. It's nice but not particularly interesting."
"So?" asked Mike.
"Well, it's just that I would write things like, 'Today I woke up, then I ate a banana. Then I walked downstairs...'"
"Then you should write that... we wanna know what's going on!"
Okay, well... at risk of becoming one of those blogs where I recount every boring aspect of my day, here it is... and it's dedicated to you, Mike, because you care!
So actually, Sunday was a rather interesting day on the whole. As you know (well, maybe you don't) today is Valentine's day and Corey is away on the boat :(. I had to get him something that I could hide in his tote before he left so I got him good Godiva chocolates from the store downtown.
He doesn't even like sweets all that much (well, sometimes he does and then eats everything), but what could I get him for Valentine's day, especially something he can enjoy on the boat? Flowers? A stuffed animal? At least good chocolates are KIND OF cool. Well, I hope so. I would have gotten something for the kitchen, but what would he do with that on a boat??! But I've digressed.
Anyway, I had to find time to write the card (I'm digressing again, but I did much better on that than for a Valentine's card I wrote last year... where I only managed to write the guy's name... nothing else... ) and to sneak the box of chocolates into his tote after he was finished packing but before he put it in his truck.
The card was easy enough. He slept in. And I thought enough to put a "Don't open until Wednesday" on the front of the card. But sneaking the chocolates into the tote was more difficult. First I had to wait until packing was completely done. Also I had to hover around the tote pretending to "help him" in case he had accidentally forgotten anything. ALSO I had to hide it so it wouldn't slide out when he picked up the tote. I figured I'd hide it in that first black piece of clothing under his CD cases.
Finally Corey went into his room to get something ready for Brannen's. The tote was in the living room so I decided to make my move.
I had my hand arm-deep in his tote, under the CD's and in the first layer of clothes when Corey called out from the bedroom, "Good thing you snuck that in there!"
I froze. "Huh?"
Is he psychic? I still had my hand in his tote as I was trying to figure out how the f%^$@#%%^$^& he knew what I was doing ... and why he sounded so casual about it.
"... Breakfast... it's a good thing you snuck that in there and made me eat," he said. "I didn't even know I was hungry, thanks."
"Oh.... ohhhhhh. No problem"
I walked in the bedroom. "Actually, it's pretty funny that you just said that."
"What do you mean," Corey looked pretty confused. "What did I say again?"
"I can't tell you... I'll tell you next week."
"Wait... was it that I said thanks for breakfast? Tell me!"
"No." (I'm so mean...) "I'lll maaaayybe tell you when I talk to you this week...if you say the right thing."
The right thing being, of course, that he found the chocolates. He DID call me Monday, but totally didn't mention anything. I thought I had thought of everything... putting it in the tote AFTER everything as packed, the "Don't open 'till Wednesday" sign on the card. The thing I didn't consider though, what if he doesn't find them at all? He SHOULD, they are in his first layer of clothes. But what if he doesn't? It's already Wednesday morning, and he hasn't found them yet. He's got to find it soon, doesn't he? Dammit, Corey... Change your clothes! And change your clothes to that black thing under your CD cases!
Jeez.

Hard to Explain - The Quiet Ones |
] |
So, as a lot of you know, I found out I'm gluten-intolerant since I came home and feel a million times better... what I didn't know however is how Fre#@$@#$king sensitive I am. So far, I've gotten sick by:
Eating rice crackers that were made on the same equipment as wheat Having half a drink with gin (distilled with grain) Eating salt and vinegar potato chips (the tiny amount of malt vinegar powder has an even tinier amount of grain when it is processed) Drinking rice dream rice milk (0.02% barley protein used in separation process) Eating spaghetti sauce (this one took me the longest time to figure out, but it turns out there is a tiny bit of vodka in the sauce... which is often distilled from grain...) Putting garlic salt on my gluten-free toast (Still haven't figured that one out) BBQ sauce (haven't figured out this one either... maybe it was in the vinegar?) Eating salmon that had been on couscous (Okay, so that one was dumb)
Anyway, I don't really mind being allergic to gluten, but being so freaking sensitive to everything is a pain in the a#@#$ and REALLY hard to get used to. It's just that, when I had thought it was only wheat, I could eat stuff that TOUCHED wheat because I always had mild stomach problems and felt kinda bad anyway, so it didn't make a difference. I kinda seem to think I can get away with not being so careful, but I can't.
Now I have a HUGE reaction to the tiniest trace amounts of anything that uses any grains even in the distillation process. It's really hard :(.
Anyway I just needed to complain for a second. But if I am careful, I hardly (well don't) get stomach aches etc and all the other things I was dealing with in the last six months of Japan. I just wish I didn't have to be so CAREFUL ALL THE TIME.
Like I said before, possibly not interesting to anyone but me, but today I am FRUSTRATED.

| New Year's Eve! |
[02 Jan 2007|12:51pm] |
I had no plans for New Year's until Brannen called on the 30th and asked if we wanted to go to his co-workers' Dave and Pauline's Casino Royale-themed New Year's. Yay! The absolute BEST PART were the toy guns Dave bought for us to play with.
I played a lot... Here's Pauline, Amy, me and Tanya. Holding the guns was fun, but running around and shooting them was so much better ;). More pictures inside... it's an image-heavy post again, so sorry!

Sweet!

It's Christmas eve and late, but I had 3 cups of coffee (okay, it was 3 sips... but BIG sips) and I'm a lightweight so I am wide awake... Here's some Christmas pictures from the Walliser household... Christmas eve, not Christmas morning, since that hasn't actually happened yet!

My mom bought us these from the dollar store and forced us all to wear them. To be honest, I didn't need much convincing.

So I woke up Sunday morning with a huge earache and a sore tongue, which I think doesn't make sense at all. I couldn't talk or it would hurt my ear. (?) Finally I went to the doctor last night and he said I had a canker sore on my tongue that is connected to a nerve, which I suppose is connected to my ear.
I was so miserable yesterday, but he cauterized it (ouch more!) and now it's getting better. Tonight I'm going to Fright Nights at Playland... I sure hope I can talk again, because I have lots to say :)
